Thursday, September 3rd, marks the beginning of the inaugural Hamburg Art Week, Crossing Currents — and for its founding edition, we would like to invite you to experience something that usually remains behind the scenes.
Ahead of the opening of Anna Guðjónsdóttir’s solo exhibition DREAMS OF EMBERS DAYS OF ASHES on 18 September, we are opening our doors while the exhibition is still taking shape.
At the heart of the installation is a monumental painting that Guðjónsdóttir is creating on site over the course of a month. A four-metre-high and fourteen-metre-long wall has been covered entirely in canvas and is gradually being transformed through the artist’s painting process.
During Hamburg Art Week, we invite you to enter this process and watch the artist at work.
Parts of the exhibition are already installed, while others are still evolving. For these four days, the gallery will exist somewhere between the clarity of the white cube and the immediacy of an artist’s studio — offering a rare glimpse into the making of both an artwork and an exhibition.
Anna Guðjónsdóttir and the gallery team will be present and happy to share insights into the ideas, decisions, techniques and installation process behind the exhibition.
We are delighted to see Hamburg’s galleries, institutions and artists coming together for the first time in this new format. The Hamburg Art Week website offers a selection of thoughtfully curated routes through the city’s diverse art scene, while free guided tours - Walk & Talk - led by art historians can also be booked through the Landesverband Hamburger Galerien.
We wish all participating artists, galleries and institutions a wonderful first edition — and all visitors an inspiring journey through Hamburg’s remarkably rich art scene.
