Yet is a cycle of site-specific interventions. Previous versions have been on view at institutions including Bethanien Art Center Berlin, Schloss Agathenburg, and Emsdettener Kunstverein. This latest work was realized in the artist’s former studio in Berlin while it was being demolished.
Each work takes a different form, reflecting an aspect of the place or situation, while the concept remains the same: using architecture as both medium and support, a temporary wall painting is realized with paint produced by pulverizing a brick from the building into a fine pigment.
Bricks have been a fundamental element of architecture since the first urban cultures. Formed from clay, the brick is one of the earliest building materials developed by humans. Its weight allows it to be lifted and laid by hand, while its regular dimensions enable the construction of complex structures, transforming ideas into physical realities.
The brick can also be understood as a metaphor, for our capacity to create, as well as for the temporality of what we create.
Questions of permanence and transformation, memory and oblivion, and different qualities of time converge in this work: the production of the brick, the time it existed as part of the architecture; the creation of the pigment, the paint, and the painting; the extension of the work over time through its iterations; the lifespan of the wall painting – and the moment of perception.
