With Stylleben, Alejandra Caicedo offers a playful yet sophisticated reinterpretation of one of painting's most enduring genres: the still life. At the centre of the composition stands a sculptural black vase filled with lush tropical flowers, including delicate pink trumpet blossoms and a striking bird-of-paradise. Beside it, a carefully arranged selection of fruit, silver cutlery, and elegant tableware creates an atmosphere of cultivated luxury.

But something unexpected interrupts this seemingly classical arrangement. Two hands, dressed in immaculate white gloves, enter the composition from opposite directions. One gently touches the flowers, while the other, adorned with a magnificent emerald ring, reaches towards the vase. Their presence introduces an intriguing sense of performance, suggesting that the objects are not merely being observed but deliberately arranged, presented, or perhaps even claimed.

Caicedo's exceptional technical precision is particularly evident in the contrast between the glossy black ceramic, the delicate folds of the gloves, the luminous fruit, and the soft, almost sculptural petals. The composition oscillates between photorealistic observation and carefully staged theatricality.

While rooted in the tradition of European still-life painting, Stylleben introduces questions of possession, presentation, and the construction of beauty. The white gloves evoke both the careful handling of precious artworks and the ritualised gestures associated with luxury and collecting.

The result is an intelligent, visually seductive painting that invites the viewer to look beyond its exquisite surface. Caicedo demonstrates how a familiar genre can become a compelling stage for contemporary reflections on aesthetics, value, and desire.
