Bamboo Dialogues: Shan Fan

Two exhibitions by the artist SHAN FAN will open on the same day. The Freie Akademie der Künste will present an expansive installation, while the TOM REICHSTEIN contemporary will show new oil paintings, ink paintings and works on paper.

On 7 Nov. 2022 at 6 p.m. the vernissage starts at the Freie Akademie, at 8 p.m. it continues at TOM REICHSTEIN. The venues are not far from each other and can be reached on foot from the Steintor underground station (Deichtorhallen).

The different accents of the two exhibitions, installation and painting, form an overall concept that SHAN FAN (born 1959 in Hangzhou) has been pursuing artistically since 2006, focusing on the meanings of the bamboo plant in Chinese and European culture.
With reference to his biography and his artistic career in China, Shan Fan, who has been living in Hamburg since 1984, has aesthetically played through the theme of bamboo in various media – from classical ink drawings to experimental performances – in search of a memorable image that is open to diverse interpretations between the personal identity of an artist in a foreign country and the memory of a cultural canon of values in the face of industrially shaped ways of life.
